Receive a warm welcome from Derek and Linda at Maplehurst and enjoy
sharing the experience of staying in an Arts and Crafts Home. The house
was completed in 1906 for a local mill owner, Mr A Fairgrieve and his
Canadian wife.
The architecture and the interior design bear witness to the best of
Scottish Arts and Crafts style, but with a distinct incorporation of
many Canadian features. For example, there is the wonderful and original
tapestry that adorns the wall above the rich oak wood panelling in the
reception hall and the many and varied stained glass windows of differing
designs and sizes, which include maple leaves, hence the name "
Maplehurst ". The large and magnificently coloured
stained glass window of " A Woman with Fruit " greets your ascent
of the stairway. The
character and style endure whilst offering a high level of comfort.
The garden extends to just over an acre, with sweeping lawns and large
rhododendron bushes which, when in flower, are the talk of the town. This year, a
new terraced garden and a large patio area will be available for our
guests to use and relax in, and for those chillier evenings a
summerhouse is available for your enjoyment and comfort. At the front
of the house there is a private and secluded parking area.
